Review of HOLLYWOODLAND

February 18, 2007

This movie was only shown locally in one movie house, Gateway. As the title suggests this movie tackles a Hollywood story, specifically the death of George Reeves. Did he commit suicide or was he murdered?

Brings back to mind another Hollywood mystery shown last year, "The Black Dahlia". Admittedly, I was more looking forward to seeing "The Black Dahlia." But now that I have watched both, I feel that "Hollywoodland" is the better movie. The story is more engaging since it is also about the actor, not only the detective (which is what "Black Dahlia" ended up).

I am definitely no Ben Affleck fan. I think he is really a bad actor ("Pearl Harbor", anyone? Need I say more?) However, I don't why it is, but when he plays a ham actor, he is actually very believeable. It happened in "Shakespeare in Love", and it happens here in "Hollywoodland."

The best actor in this movie is Diane Lane. She is really good here. Too bad she was not recognized for this role of a lonely Hollywood mogul wife who hooks up with George Reeves. Her beauty in that first scene with Ben Affleck was truly radiant. Her breakdown scene in the car was very tragic.

Adrien Brody played his down and out detective quite effectively, but you could not help feeling that you have seen this role many times over in previous movies.
