Review of THE NATIVITY STORY

7 December 2006

Just watched "The Nativity Story" with my daughter. It was a pretty straightforward portrayal of the events we all know and love. I appreciate very much the story of Mary and Joseph because it makes them real people--their arranged marriage, the virgin conception, the community reaction to Mary's pregnancy, and Joseph's dilemma.

I am disappointed with the way Keisha Castle-Hughes portrayed Mary as dull and aloof during scenes that I expected some emotion to show. On the other hand, the character of Joseph was very well-conveyed to be the strong and noble man he was, even if the actor is an newcomer. His sacrifice during the trip to Bethlehem was very well-portrayed and very emotionally-charged. Shoreh Ashdaghloo was amazing as Elizabeth. She is quite an electric presence every time she was on screen.

I was expecting a Magnificat song from Mary, which unfortunately was not shown. The interpretation of the Annunciation by the Angel Gabriel to Mary was also non-traditional as it happens outdoor in the fields.

I felt the sound quality of the dialogue was not very clear. So parents will have to be ready to interpret the story to their kids. Fortunately, we know what is going on in most of the scenes.
